Ok...another quick post before I head to Melaka for two days starting tomorrow. Since Jimbo wrote in his blog that his readers can find out more about Seremban's food offering in my blog, I felt rather obligated to feature more food entries that I think it is nice in Seremban. So here is another one.
Getting bored with food by the hawkers around my office, I bumped into NEW HAUP HUAT RESTAURANT while doing my banking at lunch time and I decided to try the Chicken & Char Siew (Braised Pork) rice there. It is located just behind the Seremban Bank Pertanian or behind the Yellow Bus Station.
It is operated by a middle aged couple. The wife were rather friendly. I think it's chicken rice is rather famous with the people around here because its always almost sold out before 1p.m. Even the restaurant stopped making coffee before 1 p.m. too! (I've been there 3 times already and still never once able to taste the shop's coffee).
The price for a plate of chicken and char siew rice is RM4.00 and the portion is rather standard. So how does it taste? Well, the chicken is deep fried, not roasted and the taste is so - so only. The rice itself is nothing to shout about. But I like the soup. Tasted very much like my dad's soup. Not many hawkers give nice chicken rice soup for free. Many tasted like boiled water with some salt and oil. But the Char Siew tasted something new..something different than the others. The Char Siew has a distinct black sauce taste and I like it. I would guess that this would be their hot selling item.
Conclusion? I would say that if you are bored with you usual Char Siew rice, this place is worth a try. If you like a lot of black sauce in your kon-low-mee, you might like their char siew. Do go early, else you might be disappointed.
