Seremban Oldest Cinema: Golden City Cinema

This is one of my on-going The Heritage Trail blog post series. Read my disclaimer here first :D. This is article No. 6.

I am not 100% sure, but I think this is the oldest cinema in Seremban where most of the original building structure are still intact.

Since the day I could count my toes, Golden City Cinema (I think that's the name!) is no longer operational. It was taken over and turned into a furniture shop called Vincent.

Seremban oldest cinema. Golden City.
The walkway.
Nothing much I could tell you about the history of this cinema as I was not born yet during it's era. But visit at this place and take a closer look. One could almost imagine how it looks like back in its glorious days with the pigeon-holed ticketing counter still intact.
The ticketing counter that are still visible today.
Take a peek inside the furniture shop and you can still see the remnants of the cinema still intact. To me, I could almost imagine the excitement back in those days of the first-time cinema goers.
The original structure that are still intact. The screen use to be at the back where the florescent lights are.
My parents used to run a food stall at one of the restaurant at the same row with this old cinema. So this street has been my playground for couple of years. I remember back then in the late 80's next to this old cinema is a beer brewing factory. I can't see what inside the factory then, but I sure remember the stench of the beer steams that escapes from the drains man-hole everyday.

There used to be a beer factory next to the cinema. The building was demolish and now its an empty lot.
The beer factory was dismantled somewhere in the 90's, I think it's due to a fire. Now it's just an empty land.

The GPS coordinate for this place is 02° 43.647' E101° 56.242'

I used to patronize many old cinemas like that one in Penang when they still used fans and wooden seats. Worst of all, smoking was allowed. Today's cinema is so comfortable that I dozed off and snored loudly! So malu kan!

I've seen a couple of movies at GC and another one that's almost as old. I don't recall the name, by it was located across the street from Ruby Theater, along the same row of a bookstore and across the street from the current Terminal 3. I watched Madame Bovary and On Fanny Hill there...R-rated back in 1975.

The other older cinema besides Kum Seng, which I couldn't recall was the Plaza. It was located almost opposite of Ruby.

However, the OLDEST cinema in Seremban was called Sapphire! It was located behind Hong Kong Bank where the now defunct Singapura material shop was. There you go...a bit of history for the annals! :-)

There are still cinema seats intact on the second floor and the screen is still there.

I am old enough to have watched movies in this cinema. It had wooden fold down seats that had some had some bugs which gave you a nasty bite sometimes. It was probably the smallest cinema in town.

This is actually my grandfather's cinema, I recently went back there to clear somethings out, its very cool that someone has made a blog about it.

You got the name right, and I absolutely love this place too. It's like Seremban's greatest hidden gem… an entrance to a whole new magical realm that's much alive with a historic, spellbinding affection for romance, and movies of the past.

It's simply breath-taking inside- a MUST-SEE for any avid photographer. We were there on a sunny, late afternoon, and instantly felt blessed that day. Every step inside felt like a stroll into a time-machine, and the sight… Oh! Every turn is a feast for the eyes… extraordinarily, hauntingly, beautiful.
